How grounded and at home do you feel today?

Our world inundates us with invitations to move up-and-out as we boldly take our place in culture as leaders and guides.

(I’m 100% into that, of course).

And yet I hear a deeper call whispering to us at the same time. Do you hear it? We’re being asked to show up with a profoundly expanded consciousness as we tackle the challenges of today, which means we must embody our intuitive, emotional intelligence and fully align ourselves with the authentic ground on which we stand.

That’s why I love this writing from the philosopher-poet David Whyte, Ground.

May it gently guide you home to your ground.

Ground is what lies beneath our feet.
It is the place where we already stand;
a state of recognition, the place or the circumstances
to which we belong whether we wish to or not.
It is what holds and supports us, but also what we do not want to be true;
it is what challenges us, physically or psychologically,
irrespective of our hoped for needs.
It is the living, underlying foundation that tells us
what we are, where we are, what season we are in and what,
no matter what we wish in the abstract, is about to happen in our body,
in the world or in the conversation between the two.

To come to ground is to find a home in circumstances
and to face the truth, no matter how difficult that truth may be;
to come to ground is to begin the courageous conversation,
to step into difficulty and by taking that first step,
begin the movement through all difficulties,
to find the support and foundation
that has been beneath our feet all along:
a place to step onto, a place on which to stand
and a place from which to step.

~ David Whyte, Consolations

I love David’s words, ‘find a home in circumstance’. When we gather up the ground on which we stand, honestly and truthfully, only then are we truly able to make the changes that are ours to make in our lives.

It’s very easy for our minds to leave the present moment and dream into the future – and I encourage that! However, for our powerful intentions and dreams to become reality – for the acorn to become the oak tree – we have to tend to the ground in which the seeds are planted.

We only know the fertility of the soil by taking the time to be honest about the state of our lives; our body health, our relationships, our sense of purpose and meaning in life, the job we do, the home that we live in.

So, my invitation to you today is to make the courageous step of standing on the ground of your very being. What is working for you and what is no longer aligned with your deepest essence?

Stand in the powerful place that your life and destiny has taken you to so far, right now, with all of its woundings, successes and victories, all of it. Claim your right to be here – ‘a place on which to stand and a place from which to step.’

Gather it all up, so that the steps you take in these critical times on our planet arise from your deeply embodied, soul essence.

Honoring your ground,
Suzanne

PS: It’s easier to love the ground beneath our feet when we are receiving support and encouragement from other brave women on the path. If you aren’t already with us, I invite you to join our warm and buzzing Facebook community of budding Mysterials to open to the possibility of an amazing container for your journey.

I care deeply about the future of our world.

I’ve long been inspired by women who dare to listen to the clarion call to lead with emotional intelligence, intuition and courage in the face of uncertainty, to create the kind of future we all long for. Women like you.

And though it’s true that we live in increasingly complex times, we also live amidst a wild upwelling of empowering knowledge, in a flowering of spiritual resources, and with the means to be in constant creative connection with one another.

Creative connection is key to this birthing process.

I saw this very directly when I was leading my leadership programs for women at Boeing several years ago. When women graduated from the programs they were given red beaded bracelet made by women in Africa in a business designed to fund women and girls in their communities. The bracelets were a powerful symbol of their courage and commitment to their own leadership development and women wore them with pride.

Many women reported wonderful stories to me of times when they would be in a business meeting sitting around the board room table, often with more men than women, and notice a red bracelet on another women’s wrist. Something special happened when they caught the eye of the other bracelet-wearing women; they gave each other a look of deep knowing.

“I see you. We’re in this together,” they seemed to silently say.

It’s normal for women to be gripped by a real fear when we dare to develop, change and rise – the fear that we’ll be alone if we really emerge in our full wisdom, love and power. It lives deep in the psyche of women.

That’s why I want to celebrate you today, and remind you that you are not alone.

You are a key part of a collective RISING.

You were born for these very times. Befriend your fear.  Have faith in what you cannot yet see. Ignite your courage and commitment to keep on walking forward even as the fog thickens and the sky darkens. The future generations of tomorrow are counting on you today.

And that’s why, having encouraged thousands of women’s innate leadership capacities, my favorite place in the world is to be in an intimate circle of women who are smart, loving, creative and ready to give birth to the next level of their authentic essence.

I love the shared experience of being a ‘murmuration’, moving courageously through our triggers and limiting beliefs to fulfill our potential, and fiercely supporting each other along the way.

I know what happens when we hold powerful visions for our individual emergence, fan the flames of our deep, inner knowing, and create new ways of leading which honor our self-care, self-expression and unique gifts.

That’s exactly why I created the Mysterial Leadership Emergence Program. Mysterial Leadership Emergence is a 15-month program, with an intimate cohort of women, preparing them to expand their leadership influence and impact in a rapidly evolving, massively globalizing environment by skillfully accessing all of their innate potential as women, benefiting themselves, others, their organizations and beyond.

By saying yes to this journey, you are choosing to catalyze your emergence; in your work, your relationships and your leadership, so that your descendants can thank you from the future for your wise, loving, and powerful choices on their behalf.

I’ll be with you every step of the way, as your guide and mentor, and you’ll receive the support and sustenance of other brilliant Mysterial Coaches who truly care about your path of service, your fulfillment, and your success.

Paraphrasing the words of poet Mary Oliver, what you choose to do “with your one wild and precious life” has impact far beyond you. During this remarkable window of history, the outcomes of the path you choose will be greatly magnified and radiate across generations to come.

With love,
Suzanne

When it comes to crafting new ways of leading as women, we have to do it ourselves, but we don’t have to do it alone.

As we dismantle the old architecture within us – created by the hyper-masculine culture that we’ve been living in for 5000 years – it takes real courage to sit in the unknown calling in the future that we know is possible.

That’s why it’s key to surround ourselves with visionaries who are pointing to new possibilities.

Yes, we need to take responsibility for the inner work within our own consciousness to step forth as leaders, but we also need to recognise that our growth is accelerated in a supportive field of possibility.

We’ve recently seen the powerful groundswell of change this kind of field can create with the #metoo movement, and the Women’s March.

We can begin to create this field in our everyday lives, by listening to those who inspire us. That’s why I’m sharing some of my favorite interviews and podcasts with you today.

So, whether you listen to them while you’re out walking your dog, washing the dishes, going for a run, or taking a bath, may you be inspired and uplifted in your unique form of leadership.

Women on the Edge of Evolution – with me, Suzanne Anderson

In this interview I share what happened to me on January 3 of 2013. When I had just finished my first book, and was working with a publisher to bring into the world, I came home to find that my beloved husband had committed suicide.

And so began my journey of test driving the new ‘operating system’ that we had been writing about in our book, in the most harrowing and challenging conditions possible. Through my grief over the coming months, this new way of being in the world, that I call Mysterial, got installed in me in a really deep way, through the alchemy of the fire of that loss itself.

How Much

By Elizabeth C. Herron

When the time comes
and you are still not ready
and everything you did has added up to
just this, because who wants
to go into the cold dark
and after all this maybe
is your only one – this life
and did you love it
what you were given? How much
did you waste wishing and weeping
and gnashing your teeth
when you could have danced –
when you could have
what you are leaving now.

I was recently discussing with a client the powerful nature of resistance to change, even when… or especially when… we want a different experience. Like many of the women who find their way into the Mysterial work, my client’s old ways of being are no longer working. She is exhausted, soul weary, and her physical health along with business and personal relationships are suffering. And she is asking the question of the poem above “…this life and did you love it what you were given?” Or asked another way by the poet Mary Oliver, “Tell me what it is you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

She knows she can’t go on like this. And yet still she resists stepping forward fully into creating a life that is more congruent with her authentic essence. What is going on?

To invite change is to set in motion the disruption of old forms and ways of being to make room for the new. This process involves a necessary tension between one’s current reality – the way things are in the present – and one’s intention and vision for the future.  This tension – the natural consequence of our thrust toward becoming – is experienced in myriad ways and is what I refer to as resistance.

The moment you step toward the new path, the unconscious resistance kicks in and says things like: Maybe it’s not so bad now the way things are; I don’t want to rock the boat; It would be self-indulgent to focus on myself. Or resistance can show up when you try to do something different, in the form of scheduling conflicts, not having enough time, logistical challenges, needing to fulfill the expectations of others, feelings of guilt about what else you ‘should’ be doing, making your problems someone else’s fault, anger that you have to change in the first place and a long list of other justifications for maintaining the status quo.

Reframing Resistance

It is important not to view the occurrence of resistance with impatience or judgment as though it were a ‘willful act’ that belies a ‘lack of commitment’. Resistance is the means by which our psyche and soma seeks to preserve stability and homeostasis.

In this sense, we can say that resistance is expected: evidence of a prevailing structure of life or way of being that has served a purpose but now no longer serves our new intended purpose. And it is necessary:  the form our resistance takes gives us information about what we actually have to address in order for lasting change to occur.

And it also lets us know that something big is at stake. Resistance is not the thing you have to conquer in order to make changes, but rather it is a sign that the changes coming are directly challenging your status quo. In that sense it is an early warning signal that you are moving in the right direction.

So I often say – welcome resistance! Welcome discomfort!

In fact, once the forces of transformation are set in motion you can rest assured that the equal and opposite force of resistance will arise. A deep desire to change the current experience automatically activates the homeostatic-seeking function of the psyche. Resistance kicks in to make sure things don’t destabilize.

We will all have our habitual ways for the ego to respond when it feels under threat. The following steps allow us to engage the energy of resistance and not fight against it.

Watch this short video of a penguin’s natural resistance to change – she doesn’t want to leave the comfort of home, she perseverates and then suddenly the momentum changes! Her bravery ignites and once she fully commits herself the gravitational pull of the old ways of being let go, and she launches herself into the surf of her new life.

Releasing the Grip of our Resistance to Change Practice

Let’s say you plan to start meditating as a way to prepare for going through The Mysterial Sequence process. You start out enthusiastically and decide to meditate 20 minutes every day of the week. Yet every time you try to sit down to meditate, you think of some crucial thing you have to do around the house.

Welcome the resistance! It is an indication that you have ignited a compelling intention to carry what you long for into reality!

This requires enough free awareness to notice that the idea to go and put in a load of laundry is a kind of resistance to settling down and being still. The act of noticing it is the moment of embrace.

Acknowledge the belief, habit or way of being that has helped to support the “status quo” and that is now being challenged. Clarify what issues, concerns or beliefs need to be reframed in order to support making different choices.

You recognize your father’s voice in your head—how he used to tell you to “stop being so lazy” if you were just sitting quietly daydreaming.

Center in the face of resistance when you meet it – ground and settle your body. Bring awareness to your breath. Consciously reframe your concerns in the context of the intention for the sake of which you are inviting change.

You sit down and close your eyes and do some deep breathing. You realize that you do not need to do your laundry right now and that the world will not fall apart if you sit still for 20 minutes.

Commit to specific behavior changes in incremental steps that you can tolerate.

You decide to just meditate three times a week while you are getting started. You do something deeply nourishing to celebrate your accomplishment.

You can use this simple process to work directly with your resistance to the steps you are taking to move forward in your life. Remember that resistance is not bad – it is just information that signals to you that you are going in the right direction! The task is to harness the energy that is stored in your resistance so that you can use it as you move toward your intention.

I am excited to share this podcast!

In 2018 I was invited to participate as a presenter at the FemmeQ Summit in LA. The conference was uniquely designed to bring together both male and female speakers to run workshops and be on panels. I had the pleasure of co-facilitating a workshop and being on a panel with Robert Schwenkler, co-founder of The Brotherhood Community, whose mission is to“create a more beautiful, equitable, and sustainable world by changing the face of modern male leadership”.

It was a very dynamic, co-creative dance together as we quickly learned about each other and got into sync to provide a powerful container for the experience of the participants.

It was an equal delight to be invited onto his podcast and to dive into a deep and magical conversation about The (Integral) Feminine Re-Awakening.

Do you find yourself giving so much to everyone else that there’s nothing left for yourself? This is an all-too common pitfall for women, especially mothers and those caring for aging parents – or sandwiched between both!

In this video, I guide you through the felt experience called Soft Animal of The Body.

This practice will teach you how to activate the para-sympathetic nervous system (a.k.a. our ‘rest and digest system’) and turn on the tap of Yin nectar, even in moments of stress and overwhelm.

Although this video was recorded in a past Facebook live, it’s still just a relevant today… enjoy!

If you’d like to go further and explore this evolutionary emergence and how it applies to your life and our collective future, I invite you to explore the book The Way of the Mysterial Woman: Upgrading How You Live, Love and Lead.

What’s up with the pendulum swinging into over-doing and over-giving when we are so stirred up? Giving to everyone else and feeling there’s nothing left for ourselves…

In two decades of research with hundreds of women, I’ve discovered a specific developmental pathway that I’m excited to share, as well as a bigger global context for “What the *^#@ is Happening”.

It may just open your mind, your heart, your body and your sense of possibility for yourself, future generations, and the world. It may just re-align you with a bigger, deeper truth that you are longing to hear.

Although this video was recorded via Facebook live in the Spring of 2017, it’s still just a relevant today.

If you’d like to go further and explore this evolutionary emergence and how it applies to your life and our collective future, I invite you to explore the book The Way of the Mysterial Woman: Upgrading How You Live, Love and Lead.

You might be asking yourself how we’ve come to learn about the existence of, and pathway to, this new way of being we call The Way of the Mysterial Woman.

This emergence was unmistakably revealed over the course of 15 years of research.

I was teaching university level leadership programs for women, when clear patterns of universal struggle and a gnawing sense of incongruence began to reveal themselves.

Women were struggling to lead in full authenticity in a hyper-masculine framework that didn’t allow for their full potential to be expressed.

There seemed to be no room for their version of wisdom, love and power that included both a  balance of Feminine and Masculine strengths.

A new evolution of woman, that embodied both of these essences, was clearly needed and pushing forth to evolve through these women. Our job through trial and error and working with hundreds of women was to map out the exact pathway of that evolution.

A path that any woman who felt called to, could travel to unfurl into a newly upgraded self.

If you’d like to go further and explore this evolutionary emergence and how it applies to your life and our collective future, I invite you to explore the book The Way of the Mysterial Woman: Upgrading How You Live, Love and Lead.

Let’s use this International Women’s Day to return home to the Ground of Being – and not just for today!

I invite you to take 5 minutes to listen to this powerful poetic prose piece called Ground from poet David Whyte.

This poem encourages us to ‘be with’ everything that is currently arising in our lives. This is the place from which a bold future can emerge.

May you come home to yourself… to the ground that is uniquely yours… to the place from which you can step forward with authentic wisdom, love and power and shape a ‘mind-blowing’ new reality.

It was very enlivening for me to do a live radio show in Seattle recently. I enjoyed a conversation with Sunny Joy, host of Sunny in Seattle, in which we discussed transformational psychology, shadow work, ancient Mystery school secrets, and visionary evolutionary thinking. This interview was recorded on Jan 4th, 2019.

  • Women finding their “voice” in the masculine-dominated business world
  • My personal experience coming out of the “ego self” and into Divine Feminine energy
  • The origins of my term “Mysterial”
  • The potential future of gender identity

I had a substantial conversation with with Runa Magnus of the podcast The Change Makers! It was a real pleasure to engage with her around why it is important for those of us who want to make a difference in the world to be running on an ‘inner operating system’ that is up to the complexities of the world today.

I also share a book recommendation, so be sure to listen in to discover one of my favorite reads…

Here are some great takeaways from the episode:

  • How to awaken your consciousness to be a match for these times
  • Why the Feminine essence is needed now
  • Learn to engage the polarities of Feminine & Masculine energy within
  • How challenging circumstances can be a transformative force of change
